I've connected with Sunil every so often for the past couple of years; but mostly read his stories on Medium. Chris was my undergraduate professor and in many ways gave me a joy of mathematics that I took to middle and high school students in Fresno, CA for 9 years. Admittedly I got a little nervous when he started telling stories about his undergraduate students because I wasn't always the best of students!The structure of the book goes between stories about math in action, to conceptual discussions, to actual problems that can be worked on. An abundance of pictures makes the authors and the activities they discuss more real. The chapter on Finland is informative without being preachy - I especially like the connections that were made to how what is experienced in our 'off time' is often what drives us forward in both math and life. There are no specific steps for success here - they acknowledge that an entire mindset needs to change and it will take time - but the seeds are being planted.As someone in the same math-loving community, it was great to see resources like QED, Matthew B, Brainquake and Dr Keith Devlin mentioned or quoted throughout the book. In a math education world that feels fractured by discussions (or lack of it) about equity and algebra, Math Recess will show or remind readers how to have fun finding patterns, helping kids find joy in discovery, and honest optimism about the future.
